Copying files to a folder set a "Remove OfflineVersion" still uses up local hard drive space

So I have a movies folder in Lima set up as "Remove Offline Version". All the items have the Lima badge, meaning they don't duplicate the space.

However, any time I drag a file over to it, it uses up my local HD space, even though the file ends up with the Lima tag and I cannot set it to "Remove offline version."

1. How do I fix this to prevent it from happening?

2. How do I get back my HD space?

I got the newer version of Lima ultra last week. When i transferred about 50 GB of data, the transfer rate was really fast for a wireless data transfer. It took some 10 mins for 50 GB transfer from my MacBook air. I was so delighted, as its better result than a physically connected external HDD. But then I got a warning that I am running low on my disk space. to my horror, the "other" section of my MB storage is increased by 50 GB..... This being my first experience, i googled it and landed here. Relieved to see that many are facing the same probem. And now in 1 hour the MB SSD has released about 10 GB space... So to cut the long story short, Lima gives you an impression that the transfer rate is very fast but in reality, its copying the data on the local SSD of your computer and in its own speed, leisurely, sending the data to lima attached HDD wirelessly. as long as I get back my space in MB, I have no issue.. will let you know...

It does appear that the space comes back very gradually over time, and it also appears that the newer versions seem to be intelligent about the process... I copied 42gb to my Lima this morning, with only about 31gb available on my startup disk but copying from an external drive. It didn't cause me any trouble or throw any errors, etc. but a) it did drop my available startup disk space to almost nothing, and b) it did NOT seem to intelligently use the external hard drive for that caching space to support the "speedy" transfer. It may have used it when my local drive got close to full and I didn't notice, I will have to experiment with this - but I WAS able to make the full copy without any errors or being denied.

And my local startup disk space is coming back slowly. I think I just need to remember to copy smaller chunks of stuff.

That's not an answer. How does one make the "Offline Only Version" stuff work as expected?

I've followed the recommendation here:

Lima still seems to be using a lot of space. Lima version is 1.4.5 on MacOS 10.13.2 Beta.
